Bruxism: what it is, symptoms, causes and treatment

Although it is often seen as "just a bad habit," it is actually a disorder with a real impact on oral health, the musculoskeletal system, and sleep quality. What is bruxism?

Sleep bruxism and daytime bruxism: what's the difference?

Experts often distinguish between two major patterns, which can coexist in the same person. 

Sleep bruxism

In this case, teeth clenching happens during the day:

1. Pain and fatigue in the jaw area.

3. Wear and changes in teeth

Constant squeezing and grinding can lead to:

It is important to distinguish the framework from:

Complications of bruxism

When left unidentified and untreated, it can lead to a range of consequences that go far beyond "a few slightly worn teeth.". 

Among the main complications are:

There is no single treatment that will "erase" the problem in everyone. The most effective approach is almost always multimodal: protecting teeth, relieving pain, correcting sleep factors, and reducing stress. 

1. Occlusal splints (mouthguards)

These are custom-made acrylic devices, made by a dentist, usually placed in the upper dental arch during sleep.

    • They distribute the clamping forces more evenly.

    • They protect enamel and restorations from direct contact and wear.

    • They can help reduce muscle activity in some cases.
